October Family Adventures on US Route 6

A family enjoys the autumn view of Pine Creek Gorge in Pennsylvania.

October brings colorful hillsides, crisp air and plenty of reasons to take a family drive along Pennsylvania’s US Route 6. In north-central Pennsylvania, you can pair a dramatic canyon view with an easy walk or bike ride, then add a stop that brings the region’s forest and railroad history to life.

Take in Pine Creek Gorge

Start near Wellsboro at Leonard Harrison State Park, where overlooks look into Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the first three weeks of October often bring a spectrum of fall colors, though the timing changes from year to year. Check the foliage before you go, and keep children close at overlooks.

For a trail outing, consider the Pine Creek Rail Trail, which follows the gorge floor. The state describes it as an easy path for families. The trail is 62 miles long, so choose a short out-and-back section that fits your family’s energy and daylight. The closest bike access to Leonard Harrison State Park is Darling Run, nine miles north of the park.

The Turkey Path at Leonard Harrison has waterfalls and canyon scenery, but the state rates this one-mile hike as most difficult. It may suit older children and experienced hikers, but it is not the gentle option for every family.

See how lumber shaped the region

A visit to the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum in Ulysses adds a hands-on history stop to your drive. The museum includes a recreated lumber camp where visitors can learn about 19th-century logging. In October, it is scheduled to be open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum recommends arriving at least 90 minutes before closing to see the exhibits.

Two special events make October visits extra appealing. The Fall Show is scheduled for October 10–11, 2026, with historic trade demonstrations, live music, food and craft vendors, and the steam-powered sawmill running Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On October 24, the museum plans Spooky Lantern Tours with ghost stories, trick-or-treating, a wagon ride, pumpkin decorating and other family activities. Check the museum’s event page for admission details before setting out.

Make a relaxed family day of it

Keep the itinerary simple: enjoy a canyon overlook, spend an hour on a chosen section of rail trail, then leave time for Wellsboro or the Lumber Museum. Pack layers, water and snacks, and plan your return drive before sunset. October daylight is shorter, and mountain weather can change quickly.

Pennsylvania’s US Route 6 makes it easy to connect scenery, outdoor time and local history in one family road trip. Choose a pace that works for your children, watch the fall colors unfold, and leave room for an unexpected stop along the way.
