Jefferson County’s Clear Creek Canyon Park provides several developed access points directly along US Route 6, including Gateway, Tunnel 1, CCR, Big Easy and Mayhem Gulch trailheads.
The park offers opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, climbing and simply spending some time beside Clear Creek.
For road trippers who have been driving for several hours, even a short walk here can turn a scenic drive into a much richer experience.
Walk Part of the Peaks to Plains Trail
The Peaks to Plains Trail is another highlight of the canyon.
Sections of this paved trail parallel Clear Creek and US Route 6, giving travelers the opportunity to experience the canyon away from their vehicle. The trail includes dramatic rock scenery, creek overlooks and access to the water.
The larger vision for the trail is impressive. It is planned as a roughly 65-mile corridor connecting the South Platte River area with the headwaters of Clear Creek near Loveland Pass.
For a US Route 6 traveler, however, you do not need to hike or bike for miles. Parking at a designated trailhead and walking a short section provides an entirely different perspective on the canyon.
Watch for the Highway Tunnels
The tunnels are among the features that give this section of US Route 6 its character.
Approaching a tunnel through the narrow canyon provides a classic Rocky Mountain road-trip scene: rock walls rising on both sides, Clear Creek below and US Route 6 disappearing directly into the mountain ahead.
Tunnel 1 is particularly convenient for visitors because Jefferson County Open Space has developed the Gateway and Tunnel 1 areas with trail access and parking. The Gateway portion of the Peaks to Plains Trail extends from Golden to the west side of Tunnel 1.
Stop at Mayhem Gulch
Mayhem Gulch is worth remembering when planning your trip.
The trailhead sits directly along US Route 6 and provides another opportunity to leave the highway and explore the canyon on foot. Visit Golden specifically recommends Mayhem Gulch as a stopping point on a Clear Creek Canyon scenic drive.
Even if you are not planning a long hike, a designated trailhead gives you a safer place to stop, stretch your legs and appreciate scenery that can be difficult to absorb while concentrating on the winding highway.
Look for Wildlife and Changing Seasons
Clear Creek Canyon can look completely different depending on when you travel.
Spring brings rushing water and fresh vegetation. Summer offers long days for hiking and exploring. Autumn adds changing foliage against the canyon walls. Winter can transform the creek, cliffs and surrounding mountains with snow and ice.
Mountain weather can also change quickly. Conditions in Golden do not necessarily tell you what you will encounter farther into the mountains.
Continue Toward Idaho Springs
The Clear Creek Canyon drive also works beautifully as part of a larger US Route 6 Colorado road trip.
Continuing west eventually brings travelers toward the Idaho Springs area, providing an opportunity to combine canyon scenery with Colorado’s mining history and mountain communities.
That combination is one of the strengths of traveling US Route 6. A single day’s journey can connect historic downtowns, recreational areas, mountain landscapes and traces of Colorado’s transportation and mining history.
Road Trip Tips
Give yourself more time than the mileage suggests. This is not a stretch of US Route 6 that should be rushed.
Use designated parking areas rather than attempting to stop along the highway. Keep your attention on the road through the curves and tunnels, and save photography for established trailheads and recreation areas.
Before leaving, check current highway and weather conditions. This is especially important in 2026 because construction of the Huntsman segment of the Peaks to Plains Trail is scheduled to continue into late 2026. CDOT reports that the work can result in daytime single-lane closures and occasional overnight closures of the canyon.
