Established in 1832, Napoleon was named after the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. During its early years the community grew slowly, with only about 300 residents by 1840. Everything began to change as new transportation routes connected the town to the rest of Ohio.

The Canal and Railroad Era

The Miami and Erie Canal became one of the community’s earliest economic lifelines, allowing agricultural products and manufactured goods to move efficiently across the state. Soon afterward, two railroad lines arrived, transforming Napoleon into an important commercial center for northwest Ohio.

A Thriving Center for Agriculture and Industry

By the 1880s, Napoleon had grown into a thriving community of more than 3,000 residents. Historical records show four newspaper offices, six churches, a bank, and numerous manufacturing businesses serving the area’s farming communities. Agriculture continues to play an important role today, with many local industries supporting Henry County’s productive farmland.

Growth Through the Twentieth Century

Throughout the twentieth century, Napoleon continued to expand. By 2000, more than 9,300 people called the city home, representing nearly one third of Henry County’s population. Today visitors will find an inviting downtown, historic architecture, locally owned businesses, community parks, and scenic views along the Maumee River.
