Ways the US Route 6 Tourist Association Protects and Promotes the Route

Ways We Protect Historic US Route 6

Historic US Route 6 stretches from Provincetown, Massachusetts, to Long Beach, California, connecting more than 600 communities across fourteen states. Preserving a highway of this size requires more than maintaining road signs. It requires educating travelers, supporting local communities, sharing history, and encouraging people to experience the route firsthand.

The US Route 6 Tourist Association was founded to do exactly that. As a nonprofit organization, its mission is to preserve the historic highway while helping the communities along it benefit from heritage tourism and economic development.

Preserving the Highway’s History

Historic highways are living museums. Every bridge, downtown district, museum, and roadside landmark tells part of America’s story.

The association works to keep that history visible by promoting historic locations, supporting preservation efforts, documenting Route 6 history, and encouraging appreciation for the Grand Army of the Republic Highway. These efforts help ensure that future generations can experience the route much as travelers have for decades.

Promoting Heritage Tourism

One of the association’s most visible roles is encouraging people to travel Historic US Route 6.

Instead of simply driving from one destination to another, travelers are encouraged to explore museums, scenic byways, historic downtowns, locally owned restaurants, and community events. Heritage tourism supports small businesses while helping visitors discover places they might otherwise miss.

Supporting Communities Along the Route

Every town along Historic US Route 6 has its own story.

Throughout the year the association highlights:

  • Community Spotlights
  • Locations of Interest
  • Local museums
  • Historic downtowns
  • Festivals and public events
  • Historical societies
  • Small businesses

These stories increase visibility for communities while inspiring travelers to spend more time exploring America’s longest historic highway.

Sharing Free Travel Resources

Planning a road trip becomes much easier when reliable information is available.

The association maintains travel resources that include:

  • State by state information
  • Maps
  • Travel inspiration
  • Historic attractions
  • Museum directories
  • Preservation stories
  • Road trip ideas

These free resources help travelers build meaningful itineraries while discovering destinations throughout all fourteen Route 6 states.

Educating Through Digital Storytelling

Today’s travelers often begin their journey online.

The association reaches new audiences through articles, photography, newsletters, videos, and social media. Digital storytelling introduces readers to communities, preservation projects, museums, scenic drives, and hidden gems that make Historic US Route 6 unique.

Every article published helps preserve another piece of Route 6 history while making that information easier to discover through search engines and social media.

Building Partnerships

Preservation succeeds when organizations work together.

The association collaborates with:

  • Museums
  • Historical societies
  • Tourism organizations
  • Chambers of commerce
  • Community volunteers
  • Local businesses
  • Preservation advocates

These partnerships strengthen awareness of Historic US Route 6 while encouraging economic growth in communities along the highway.
